The readership of the Courrier

Flash survey, June-July 1997

by Helen Jessua

Welcome to our Web pages, L'enquête éclair

The survey has been conducted as part of a short (2 months) marketing work experience that I made at the DPEnv.
The questionnaire which I had drafted was simple and was made up of seven questions among which six were closed and one was opened.

286 persons out of the 10,674 addressees of the Courrier had been interrogated including 143 by e-mail (those which addressees appeared on files of addressees), the others by telephone (114), by fax (5) and by mail (24). In all, 140 persons replied. The rate of answer had been about 45%, which is very satisfactory. For want of time, I had not been able to interrogate some categories of people, administrations or associations residing abroad or which were too difficult to get in touch with.

Here is the broad outline of the results. A more complete report is available at request.: just contact us.

About the Courrier-printed

How have you been acquainted with the Courrier ?

A lot of addressees have been acquainting with it through colleagues or friends since three years at least.
Until now, Internet and the press have played a very minor role.

How many persons read the Courrier ?

56%, so more than a half of addressees makes two or more other persons read it. Thus, there are at least 2.6 readers per Courrier which is distributed. This explains why a large number of persons have been acquainted with the journal through colleagues or friends.

What do you do with the Courrier after having read it ?

The majority of readers keeps it at home or at work. Most of the others put it at the availability of other persons. This statement explains the fact that the publication is considered as a very useful working and information tool.

How do you read the Courrier ?

Three quarters of readers have been able to rank the colums of the journal in a decreasing interest order, the others reading it only in accordance with articles they are interressed in. Problématiques et débats, Colloques, On en parle encore, Bibliographie and the Dessins de Rousso (Rousso's sketches) are addressees’ favorite columns. Repères dans le PAF, Brèves, Autres repères, autres paysages, Aveulouque, In memoriam and Urbi et Orbi come behind.

About our Web pages

Do you know our site ?

It is known by one third of the readers who are generally satisfied as well with its form, finding its reading pleasant and easy, as with its content. On the whole, they think that it is a good complement of the printed review but they however don’t want the last one to dissapear and only have an Internet version of the Courrier at which they seem to be less attached.

Subjects of Environnment you are the most interressed in

Water, water and still water, around all its sides. Next comes what deals with the relationship between agriculture and environnment (the speciality of the Courrier!), followed by biodiversity and genetic ressources, landscape and land use managment. Following subjects are ranked in a decreasing interest order : pollution, sustainable development and agriculture, ecosystem modification, biotopes, fragmentation and chorology, GMO and biotechnologies. To come to an end, conservation, biological control and pest managment, fauna, pesticides and ecotoxicology, botany, cattle breeding and zootechny, nuclear, energy, food safety and ... mad cow.

Thank you a lot to all the people who replied for their kindness and their help.
