Stripe rust, or yellow rust, is a plant pathogen caused by the fungus Puccinia striiformis f.sp. tritici, which attacks the leaves and ears of wheat. Thanks to the genetic analysis of samples taken from different parts of the world, researchers at INRA Versailles-Grignon and their colleagues have been able to characterise different populations of the pathogen and describe their most likely migration routes. They have identified six distinct genetic groups scattered around the globe, all of which originate near the Himalayas.
