Historical Missions
© INRA ► Management of the National Zootechnical Database
The genetic data processing centre, the CTIG, was created in 1968. Its two main missions are to manage nationally the zootechnical databases and to supply the computing means necessary for breeding animal evaluation.
Since 2000, the renovated genetic information system has been testifying to an important change in the way the national databases function : the same software, which is completely mobile, is used by all the organisations implicated in data collection and management. Since 2007, the genetic interprofessional organisation is in charge of the data system with the CTIG being responsible for it on the national level.
Genetic evaluation of breeding animals is the estimation of the value of a breeding animal that what we hope the animal will transmit to its descendents. Evaluation is the key factor of efficiency and guidance of selection. It is also a key factor for the price of a breeding animal and genetic flow including on an international level. The Division is very implicated in defining selection objectives for each population. Since selection can have long-term side effects, it must reflect the society’s needs and the preservation of genetic diversity. This objective of lasting selection of animal populations is one of INRA’s missions.
► Other assessments in Animal Genetics Regular assessments of other species are performed in particular for rabbit, poultry or fish farming, individually or within the framework of the Syssaaf. The Division, for whom resource conservation is important, is also present in the different authorities of the Genetic Resource Office and the National Cryobank.
