Conference of the Scientific project COSADD, 24 November, Paris

Sustainable development, which has grown over the years, contributes to the development of new systems and new stakes for breeding. Today, those involved in animal selection must think about the animals that will be needed tomorrow.
COSADD : a part of the ANR programme treating the stakes of
«Agriculture and Sustainable Development»

The aim of COSADD is to study how new selction criteria and objectives are made using a multidisciplinary research approach that involves geneticists, zootechnicians and scientists in the social sciences and humanities.
This project, coordinated by INRA from 2007 to 2009, concerns four animal husbandry industries, chosen for their contrasting methods of selection and production : beef cattle, pigs, broiler chickens and fish.

The following will be studied in more detail :
the socio-economic stakes of the four animal industries and how they can be translated into objectives for animal selection ;
• understanding how the industry and scientists collaborate when defining selection objectives and criteria  ;
• developing innovative selection criteria from two objectives chosen for their potential contribution to a reasoned management of husbandry systems : reduced animal stress and limiting waste from animal excrements.

By integrating the results into future research selection programmes, we hope to improve animal husbandry's contribution to sustainable development and to legitimate animal selection through cooperation with those involved in animal husbandry and the society.

This project involves 12 INRA research units belonging to the  INRA Divisions "Animal Genetics", "Animal Physiology and Breeding Systems", "Sciences for Action and Development", and "Social Sciences, Agriculture and Food, Rural Development and Environment" along with AgroParisTech, IFREMER and technical institutes (the Institutes of husbandry, the porcine industry and poultry breeding). It benefits from a participation from the call for project  for Agricultural development and rural innovation and from a partnership with Casdar.

The seminars goals :
• To share the stakes of society and research that accompany the husbandry industry and animal selection, and to go even farther by building sustainable farming and development
• To share knowledge on the approaches, methods and tools that are proper to this project
• To improve exchanges and interactions between scientists, technicians and professionals of the animal husbandry industry
