Artichoke latent virus

This disease is present in Mediterranean countries that produce artichokes.

Identification, Description, Biology, Epidemiology, Treatement, Possible misleading, Images

[R]Identification
The virus may be detected using classical assays on indicator host plants or by serological tests, in particular using ELISA and immunoelectronmicroscopy (ISEM) techniques.

[R]Description
Infected plants do not show any symptoms, however the pathogenic agent does associate with other viruses (in Spain these are reputed to be reponsible for serious damage).
The crop may suffer serious production losses.

[R]Biology
The disease is spread in non persistent form, by several species of aphids ( Myzus persicae , Aphis fabae , Brachicaudus cardui ).

[R]Epidemiology
The reserves of the inoculum are unlimited, virtually all artichoke plants harbour the virus.
The generalized dissemination of the disease depends on the method of virus transmission (carried by aphids) and on the artichoke's vegetative propagation (offshoots).

[R]Treatement
Use healthy material for propagation.
If possible, practice annual cultures only.
Generalize the utilization of material without the virus for propagation in order to avoid reinfections from contaminated stock.
