Beet yellows virus (BYV)
Beet necrotic yellows virus,

Crops attacked: sugar beet .

[R]Identification
Identification by visual inspection.
ELISA test available.

[R]Description
Intervein yellowing of the lamina.
The leaves become thick and brittle.
Small red-brown spots develop, then show a tendency to enlarge and join giving the leaves a reddish colouring.
Serious yield loss if the disease occurs early.
Survives on seed crops as well.

[R]Biology
The virus is transmitted by of which the most efficient are : Myzus persicae and Aphis fabae .
The sources of inoculum are : the beet (unharvested, ensiled or its seed crops), the winter spinach or various weeds : Anagallis arvensis , Chenopodium spp. , Papaver Rhaeas , Capsella boursa-pastoris , Veronica sp. , Polygonum sp. .

[R]Epidemiology
The symptoms occur on circular areas (foci) in the fields in late spring or in summer.
The disease may quickly spread to the whole field.
Mild winter followed by dry warm conditions in spring facilitate the spreading.

[R]Treatement
Avoid the vicinity of host plants.
Control of vectors.

[R]Possible misleading
Beet mild yellowing virus which may occur on the same field.
