Elsinoe ampelina Shear

Mycologia, ASCOMYCOTINA, DOTHIDEALES, ELSINOACEAE .

Crops attacked: grapevine .

[R]Common Names :

Anthracnose,

It is a common disease of European origin.

Identification, Description, Biology, Epidemiology, Treatement, Possible misleading, Images

[R]Identification
Sclerotia are observed in the vine shoots.

[R]Description
Reduction of plant development causing growth reduction and drastic yield decrease.
On the leaves, black circular spots that dry and give rise to small holes ("shot-hole" appearance).
In the vine shoots, grey cankers with black edges and on the berries, sunken circular lesions also grey with black margin ; the berries can crack and dry out.

[R]Biology
The fungus overwinters, surviving in adverse conditions as sclerotia on the shoots, providing inoculum in spring (primary infections).
Secondary infections are due to conidia formed on young shoots in the primary infections (adult leaves are hardly affected). The incubation period is 5 - 6 days.

[R]Epidemiology
Rainy and dewy springs are favourable to the attack.
The development of the fungus starts at low temperatures .
9-10 °C.

[R]Treatement
Chemical treatments in winter to destroy sclerotia, include ferrous sulfate or sodium arsenite.

[R]Possible misleading
Anthracnose lesions on the shoots can be confused with hail injury.
