Identification, Description, Biology, Epidemiology, Treatement, Possible misleading, Images

[R]Identification
Difficult to isolate because of poor growth in culture medium.
Verrucous colonies producing spores can be obtained from apothecia on moist filter paper.

[R]Description
Small brown circular leaf spots 0.5-2 mm in diameter are visible on both sides of the leaf.
On the lower surface pink disks form in the center of the spots (apothecia).
In severe attacks symptoms also occur on the petioles and the disease causes important defoliation.

[R]Biology
Apothecia overwinter on living or fallen -not decayed- leaves.
The released ascospores infect other plants and under favourable conditions the disease spreads to the whole crop.
There is no conidial production.

[R]Epidemiology
The epidemics spreads in conditions of high humidity and temperatures under 25 °C.

[R]Treatement
Early harvesting reduces the forming primary inoculum every year.

[R]Possible misleading
The leaf spots ofLeptoshaerulinaorAscochyta imperfectabut inPseudopezizathere is no ring around the spots which produce apothecia.
