[R]Description
The disease appears in the heading stage.
Elongated orange-yellow and sometimes black pustules occur on the sheaths and both surfaces of the leaves.
Purplish-black lesions with the aspect of little sticks.
Early disease may retard heading and grain yield.
[R]Biology
The fungus overwinters through the teliospores.
In spring the teliospores germinate and produce the basidiospores.
In spring as well, aecia are formed which produce aeciospores in the alternate host.
Contaminations through aeciospores start the uredinial phase (urediniospores) on the graminae.
Several generations of urediniospores follow each other during one season.
In moderate climate the last generation of urediniospores can form the source of inoculum for the following spring.
[R]Epidemiology
Dissemination of the urediniospores by the wind.
Uredinial germination and the penetration both require wetting of the foliage (night dew).
[R]Treatement
Treatment is efficient and worth only if applied to oidium ( Erysiphe graminis ) at the same time.
