[R]Description
Isolated pustules occur anywhere between the first leaf and the tiller : they are orange on the leaves and surrounded by a chlorotic halo.
From the beginning of the "boot" stage to the end of the swelling stage tiny sporulating brown pustules occur on both surfaces of the leaf.
The stem, leaves and sheath are covered by differently coloured pustules.
[R]Biology
The fungus survives in the winter barley and grasses as brown urediniospores on both leaf surfaces.
The teliospores (brown or black) stay under the leaf epidermis.
[R]Epidemiology
Urediniospores are dispersed by the wind. Their germination is facilitated by the night dew in mild temperatures (over 5 °C.).
Mild winters increase the epidemic.
