[R]Description
Wilting of the affected plants, brown corky swelling of the roots which show a corrugated surface.
[R]Biology
The disease occurs mainly in glasshouses but also in soils which have repeatedly carried crops of solanaceous or cucurbits.
The fungus survives as chlamydospores.
It colonizes the root system of cultivars and certain weeds and persists for a long time in the soil.
Spread is facilitated by infected soil and handling of infected implements.
[R]Epidemiology
Several strains are reported, the temperature optima varying according to their original location.
The optimum temperature for growth in the soil is 15 - 20 °C. or 26 - 30 °C. for the mediterranean strains.
[R]Treatement
Deep soil steam sterilization (ten hours under canvas, etc.) or grafting on resistant rootstocks.
Under attack : earthing up and leaf fertilisation.
