[R]Description
Gooseberry mildew shows on several organs in the goosberry. The disease occurs in spring when white cottony down covers the young twigs, then gets thicker and turns brown through the summer.
The growth of the twig is obstructed, it becomes distorted, its leaves dry out and fall prematurely.
Fruits can also be affected : they are covered by white patches which turn reddish-brown.
[R]Biology
The fungus overwinters in the buds as mycelium.
Primary infection is caused by this mycelium and the ascospores of the perithecia persisting from the previous year.
The change of colour in the patches occuring on fruits corresponds to the formation of large masses of perithecia on them.
[R]Epidemiology
The spread of the disease is facilitated by hot and humid summers (RH >97%). It slows down or stops in dry conditions.
