- Biennial plant. Its sheathed stem is harvested in the first year and consumed as a vegetable (*) .
- France is the principal European producer.
- Cultivation generally occurs in the open. Harvesting begins 5 to 7 months after sowing, before the floral scape develops, and continues according to demand.
- There are spring, winter and autumn varieties.

_ Principal European pests: those of onion. The most important are the leek moth (Acrolepiopsis assectella) and the onion fly (Delia antiqua).
