[R] Brassica rapa L. var. rapa (Brassicaceae).
Fr: Navet; Ge: Weissrübe; Sp: Nabo; It: Rapa; Pt: Nabo.
.
- Herbaceous, annual or biennial plant having a more or less spindle-shaped, taproot with yellow flowers whose inflorescence is long (1 m) (*) .
- It is cultivated for its root with a white, red, purplish-blue epidermis consumed by animals (forage turnip: var. rapa) or by man (vegetable turnip: var. rapifera).
- The vegetable turnip is cultivated particularly in spring and autumn. Cultivation may be in open fields, under tunnels or under glass. Harvesting occurs 8 to 10 weeks after seeding.
.
- Diseases: mosaics and yellowing due to viruses transmitted by aphids have a limited effect on its cultivation.
.
- Principal European pests: the most important pests are the cabbage root fly
(Delia radicum) and the turnip root fly
(Delia floralis) whose larvae burrows into the roots. The large striped turnip flea
(Phyllotreta nemorum), the bean seed fly
(Delia platura) and the greenfinch
(Carduelis chloris) attack young seedlings.
The root deformations caused by the turnip gall weevil
(Ceuthorhynchus pleurostigma) are of note as well as certain aphids which transmit virus diseases (yellowing of the leaves and mosaics). The brassica pod midge
(Dasineura brassicae) is detrimental to seed production.
