- Annual legume, with rapid growth, similar to garden peas.
- It is cultivated for its seeds, used in animal feed.
- Winter varieties, sown in autumn and harvested in June - July are differentiated from spring varieties with short growing cycles.

- Diseases: the most serious are anthracnose (Ascochyta pisi, A. pinodes, A. pinodella) and downy mildew which affect the cultivation throughout its cycle.

- Principal European pests: the most serious pests are the field slug
(Deroceras reticulatum), the (Arion hortensis) and the wood pigeon
(Columba palumbus) which attack the seeds and seedlings.
The pea aphid
(Acyrthosiphon pisum) and the pea moth
(Cydia nigricana) may also cause significant damage.
The nematodes Pratylenchus vulnus
and Meloidogyne hapla
attack the roots. The silver y moth
(Autographa gamma) attacks the leaves. Finally, the (Frankliniella robusta) and the pea beetle
(Bruchus pisorum) damage the flowers and pods.
