- Tall, (1 to 2 m in height), annual straw cereal, with a strong tiller, which is often found growing in poor soils. The inflorescence is a very long and very awned spike (*) .
- Germany is the principal European producer.
- It is cultivated for its grain (caryopsis), used in the production of bread and alcohol. It may also serve as forage. The long, thin stalks are also used.
- It is sown in autumn for harvesting in summer.
