- Annual cereal 50 cm to 1 m in height. The inflorescence is a loose panicle whose spikelets generally contain only 2 flowers. The lower lemmae have a long spine or beard (*) .
- It is cultivated for its grain (caryopsis), and also as green forage. The grain is used in nutrition; human (oat flakes, alcohol) or animal.
- There are winter varieties sown from the beginning of October, and spring or alternate varieties sown at the end of February.
- Forage oats are sown in the spring, often with a forage legume.
