- Forage legume that is an annual or a perennial, with taproot (*) .
- This genus includes several species, cultivated either for use as forage, or for its protein-rich grain, or for use as green fertilizer. White lupin (L. albus) and yellow lupin (L. luteus) are the most cultivated of the forage species.
- Lupins produce a dangerous alkaloid that gives the forage and grain a sour taste and which is absent from the varieties that are cultivated for animal feed.
