Salsify


[R] Tragopogon porrifolius L. (Asteraceae).
Fr: Salsifis; Ge: Haferwurzel; Sp: Salsifi; It: Sassefrica; Pt: ?.

-Biennial plant with reddish-purple flowers and narrow leaves, of southern origin, very much cultivated in Belgium (*) . The leaves are smaller than those of black salsify.
- The smooth, yellowish-blue root is consumed as a vegetable.
- Its cultivation resembles that of black salsify: the seeds are sown slightly later (May-June).
- It is increasingly being replaced by the black salsify.

- Diseases: identical to those of black salsify.

- Principal European pests: identical to those of black salsify.
