[R] Scorzonera hispanica L. (Asteraceae).
Fr: Scorsonère; Ge: Schwarzwurzel; Sp: Salsifi negro; It: Scorzonera; Pt: Escorçoneira.
.
- Herbaceous, perennial plant, having a long taproot blackish-brown flesh.
- It is gradually replacing the salsify (*) , as it is hardier, its roots, consumed as vegetables, are less fibrous and the yield is higher.
- Begium is the principal European producer.
- It is sown in March-April and the harvest begins 6 to 8 months later.
.
- Diseases: very few in number. Only powdery mildew (Erisiphe cichoracearum) and the white rust of Compositae (Albugo tragopogonis) may be dangerous.
.
- Principal European pests: very few in number; birds may eat the seeds and root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) attack the roots. In addition, there may be damage due to aphids, for example the black bean aphid (Aphis fabae).
