Buckwheat


[R] Fagopyrum esculentum Moench (Polygonaceae).

- Annual cereal introduced to Europe in the Middle Ages.
- The seeds are black, triangular achenes (*) and are chiefly used in human nutrition (Buckwheat (sarrazin) crêpes in France and black polenta in Italy ) and for the nutrition of fowl and pigs.
- Buckwheat may be sown as a "catch crop" (3 month cycle) after an annual spring forage crop. As a principal cultivation, sowing occurs in April-June; harvesting in September-October.

- Diseases: poorly known.

- Principal European pests: the black bean aphid (Aphis fabae).
