- Annual cereal with an inflorescence that is a barbate, 2-, 4- or 6-rowed spike (*) .
- It is cultivated for its grain (caryopsis), used in brewing or animal feed. It may also be cultivated as green forage, for pasture, or silage.
- Spring barley, sown in February and harvested after maturity, when the stem supporting the spike starts to bend, is differentiated from winter barley (winter six-row barley), sown at the beginning of October and harvested at maturity.
