Cucumber


[R] Cucumis sativus L. (Cucurbitaceae).
Fr: Concombre; Ge: Gurke; Sp: Pepino; It: Cetriolo; Pt: Pepino.

- Annual creeping plant cultivated for its long fruit having a dark green skin and a watery, pale, green flesh. They are consumed raw (*) .
- The principal European producers are the Netherlands, Spain and Greece.
- Sowing (3 to 5 seeds together) occurs in open fields, just after the end of the frost season. Only one plant is kept after thinning. Harvesting starts at 8 to 9 weeks, when the fruits are 30 to 40 cm long, and spreads over several months. It is also possible to transplant nursery plants, around mid-May; the harvest is 5 to 6 weeks later.
- Cucumbers may be cultivated in open fields, in greenhouses or under plastic film.

- Diseases: those of Cucurbitaceae.

Principal European pests: those of Cucurbitaceae. The bean seed fly (Delia platura) also causes damage.
