[R]Biology
- E. persicae infests vine, peach, currant, rose (Rosa) and Wistaria.
- E. corni is more polyphagous and also attacks plum, cherry, apricot, walnut, hazel, dogwood (Cornus).
Young nymphs move rapidly on the surface of plants and may be transported by the wind over long distances. They occur on the underside of leaves, especially along the veins.
- Number of eggs produced: 1500-2000.
- Non-fertilized females only produce females.
- Duration of incubation: 15-30 days.
[R]Life Cycle
- Hatching begins in mid-June, the 1st nymphal moult ocurring in mid-August. Nymphs overwinter on roots, branches and trunks.
- Adults emerge in April and migrate to young branches, shoots and young leaves(*) . The female lays her eggs during several days from late May to early July. She then dies, her scale protecting the eggs during the whole embryonic development period (*) .
- Males (*) become adults when female nymphs have completed the 2nd moult.
[R]Damage
Blossom on affected plants is sparce, fruits remain small; fruit trees are often covered with considerable quantities of sooty moulds.
