[R] Order of holometabolous insects ; larva of Symphyta (lower Hymenoptera) caterpillar-like; higher Hymenoptera provided with a sting sometimes modified into an oviscapt, larva apodous and with a well-developed head; adult bearing 2 pairs of membranous wings, fore wings being twice as large as hind wings; mouthparts adapted for biting or lapping.
Order includes numerous beneficial insects: pollinators (honey bee, bumble bee, etc.) and parasites such as trichogrammids. It also includes many pests from various families: the Cephidae, Tenthredinidae and Vespidae.
