Suidae


[R] Family of the order Artiodactyla, not belonging to the Ruminantia. Animals are characterized by a prominent snout ending in a prehensile, bare nose pierced by the nostrils. The nape muscles as well as the senses of smell and hearing are well developed. The Suidae have a full set of teeth, canines modified into long tusks, which grow throughout life and are particularly well-developed in males.
The European species Sus scrofa has given rise to the domestic pig, with its numerous breeds, and the wild boar .
