- Many Cucurbitaceae are cultivated for their fruit, consumed raw or cooked, and used for human or animal nutrition: included are: gourds (marrows and courgettes, pumpkins and squashes), watermelons, cucumbers, melons.

- Diseases: those of Cucurbitaceae may be classified in the following manner:.
- non-specific pathogens that frequently cause powdery mildew, botrytis, and cucumber mosaic (CMV);.
- non-specific pathogens that act in a spectacular manner: the effect of downy mildew ( on cuccumber, gherkin and melon);.
- specific pathogens, such as the dieback of cuccumber and melon.

- Principal European pests: various pests attack Cucurbitaceae. Root-knot nematodes
(Meloidogyne spp.) induce the formation of many small swellings on the roots.
The two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae), and the melon and cotton aphid
, (Aphis gossypii) attack the leaves.
The western flower thrips
(Frankliniella occidentalis), the onion thrips
(Thrips tabaci) and the glasshouse whitefly
, (Trialeurodes vaporarium) are the species that cause the most damage to protected crops.
