[R]Biology
- It lives throughout the year without producing sexual forms. The aphids, either apterous or alate, are always parthenogenetic viviparous females. - It is a polyphagous species, with a marked preference for herbaceous leguminoseae. It feeds on the young shoots, leaves, inflorescences and fruits and, in herbaceous plants, also on the stems.
- Host reaction to insect feeding are not characteristic but large populations on young plants can prevent their normal growth, affecting the blossom. The infestations of crops are always initiated by alate forms produced on preinfested plants. It is a species that attracts ants.
[R]Damage
The attacks to shrubs and trees are rarely of economic interest except on Robinia pseudoacacia where outbreaks can sometimes affect its ornamental value. The following herbaceous leguminosae can be seriously damaged, either by direct insect feeding or by the transmission of virus diseases: beans and broad beans, peas, chick peas, lucerne, clover, groundnut, and others. It is a vector of several viruses: broad bean mosaic virus, cucumber mosaic virus, lucern mosaic virus, groundnut rosette virus, etc.
