[R]Biology
Nowadays anholocyclic and restricted to artichoke; this species probably used to be heteroecious, with Elaeagnus as the primary host. It is common on artichoke throughout the year, even during the winter. Winged forms migrate to crops over long distances in spring and summer, thus forming new colonies.
[R]Damage
- This aphid occurs only on the underside of leaves and junctions of veins but neither causes distortion nor settles on the main stems or heads.
- The presence of more than 200 aphids causes the plant to become weakened, leading to a reduction in size and a loss of value of the harvested head. Populations sometimes die out in late summer due to the action of Entomophthorales (order of microscopic fungi attacking insects exclusively) and to the parasitic action of Hymenoptera (Aphidiidae).
