[R]Biology
- An autoecious species developing on strawberry.
[R]Life Cycle
- Apterous virginoparae overwinter on strawberry. Aphid numbers increase progressively from spring onwards, a small proportion of alatae emerging between April and June (depending on the regions) and infesting neighbouring crops.
Sexual forms are quite rare, aphids reproducing parthenogenetically throughout the winter if temperature remain above 4.5°C.
[R]Damage
- The foliage and petioles are covered with honeydew and exuviae. Often present on free-living or glasshouse strawberry trees, this aphid is highly feared owing to the viruses it transmits: strawberry yellow-edge virus (SYEV), strawberry crinkle virus (SCV) and strawberry mottle virus (SMV).
