[R]Biology
- The citrus fruit mite occurs wherever Citrus fruits are growing. Its origin is unknown, but could be southern Asia, like the citrus fruits it attacks.
- It feeds on fruits, foliage and sometimes young branches. It is found on both surfaces of leaves but appears mostly to feed on the upper surfaces. It prefers young but hardened leaves situated at the periphery of the tree.
- It rapidly infests other trees by suspending itself from a silken thread which is transported by the wind.
- Its reproduction is less pronounced on immature, old or damaged foliage.
- It produces very little silk.
[R]Life Cycle
- Two demographic peaks are generally observed: one in the spring or the end of summer and another in autumn or at the beginning of winter. This may be due both to climatic conditions or the state of foliage, whether favourable or not to reproduction.
- This mite produces numerous generations which overlap throughout the year.
[R]Damage
Attacked tissue become yellow or white, or takes on a bronzy appearance (*) . In the case of heavy infestation, partial defoliation of trees is observed, particularly during dry, windy weather.
