[R] Terrestrial or aquatic molluscs with a foot acting as a propulsive organ, the animal gliding along on a trail of slime, and bearing at its front 2 pairs of "horns". The mouth contains a rasping tongue or radula, which enables the animal to graze the surface of plant tissues.
The mantle secretes a spiral-shaped shell, whose size can be reduced.
Terrestrial snails and slugs, having a highly reduced internal shell, are provided with a lung with an aperture (pneumostome) and often cause damage to cultivated plants.
Among pest slugs in Europe rank the field slug
(Deroceras reticulatum) and the (Arion hortensis).
