[R] Order of insects including especially the family Forficulidae; body elongate; mouthparts chewing; elytra very short and highly sclerified, hind wings projecting beyond them when at rest; abdomen flattened, highly sclerotized and bearing a pair of cerci modified into forceps; oviscapt absent. Like most Dermaptera, earwigs are nocturnal, rarely fly and often form groups of about 10 individuals.
