[R] Hymenoptera Formicidae and Myrmicidae.
Ants are social insects. The colony typically includes winged, sexual individuals (males and females, one of the latter becoming the queen and ensuring reproduction) and workers (sterile, wingless) females responsible for caring for the young (wormlike, apodous larvae and pupae), providing food and defending the colony.
They have a varied diet: leaves, seeds, fungi, insects, sugary juices (nectar, honeydew), etc.
This group does not include any pests in Europe, but an abundance of ants, attracted by the honeydew of certain Homoptera whose colonies protect, may constitute a problem.
