The MIA division does research in different fields of mathematics (statistics, probabilities, dynamic systems, automatics, etc.) and also informatics (knowledge management and representation, algorithms) in the framework of projects and programmes defined in terms of INRA's priorities in the fields of agriculture, the environment and foods.
Each research project is thus a part of both a cross-cutting methodology theme and a mission-oriented theme.

The methodology aspects are built around 6 major methodology themes each involving several disciplines. These major themes were largely chosen as a result of the analysis undertaken in the Modelling Report.
There are four levels of Mission-oriented Fields, corresponding to different scales of complexity of living matter.
