Virology at SASA sits within a multi-disciplinary team of diagnosticians which includes entomologists and nematologists. The main purpose of the Virology laboratory is to provide diagnostic support to the Scottish Seed Potato Classification Scheme. Research programmes are intended to further enhance testing and advice in support of the scheme. The primary research area of the team is an ongoing project to investigate the aphid transmission of non-persistent potato viruses (PVYO, PVYN and PVA) under Scottish field conditions. The team also works on the characterisation of Scottish PVY isolates using both biological and molecular techniques.
