  Innovation at the Heart of INRA's Plans

As the new President of INRA, I have made innovation one of the five pillars of my plans for the Institute that I presented to Parliament. In a global context of climate change, the issues that affect natural, agricultural and food resources mean that innovation offers the crucial lift for the competitiveness of industrial actors. For this reason, I am determined to ensure the efficiency of our policies regarding support for companies, local government bodies or technical institutes, and that the academic excellence of INRA – which remained the number two agricultural research institute worldwide in the 2015 ratings - should be reflected in the field by our partners in the private sector.

In 2015, INRA set up a Directorate for Partnership, Transfer and Innovation, which resulted from an in-house and detailed analysis of the need to optimise our impact. The Directorate aims to ensure the technological maturity of our findings so that they can rapidly be appropriated by farmers and companies, and notably the SME and start-ups that we are helping to grow. In 2016 and thereafter, I shall be providing support for research programmes constructed jointly with actors in the field, as well as the development of living laboratories. My objective is that our expertise and partnerships should generate breakthrough innovations for society, at the service of farmers faced with difficulties and demanding consumers.

You can be assured of my enthusiasm, and that of all the INRA agents responsible for transfer and innovation: working together, we can enhance our efforts. I am committed to open and practical research that can respond to the challenges of our modern world.

More than ever, we can achieve our goals by working in partnership!

New ways to improve genetic resistance against sunflower broomrape

For many decades, sunflower broomrape has been damaging crops in Europe. It appeared in 2009 in France since when more regions have become infested. As members of a project funded by Promosol, INRA scientists in Toulouse and their partners are exploring the interactions between sunflower and broomrape in order to improve management of the risk induced by this parasitic weed.

Table poultry: hopes of a recovery for the French sector?

There are three main reasons for hope regarding the French poultry sector: a marked dynamism of global demand, a French market with high added value and early signs of restructuring in the sector.

A new dry fractionation process for oilseed meals

By combining ultrafine grinding operations with electrostatic sorting, scientists have obtained both protein-enriched, low-lignin fractions and lignin-enriched fractions.  This patented process offers interesting perspectives for both livestock feed production and plant chemistry.

Could fried foods become less fatty?

A software program to simulate oil impregnation has been developed and validated. It offers access to the dynamics of oil penetration into foods as a function of the degree of tissue damage and cooling conditions.  These findings open the way to new strategies for the design of fried foods containing less fat.

Food chains: is local more sustainable?

The GLAMUR European project that ended in 2016 aimed at integrating advancement in scientific knowledge on the impact of food chains, to increase food chain sustainability through public policies and private strategies.

Freezing of lactic acid bacteria: resistance markers identified by means of synchrotron radiation

Producing bacterial populations that are homogeneous and able to resist different stresses is important to the quality of fermented products. This original approach, developed in partnership with Synchrotron Soleil, combines the biochemical and physiological characterisation of a particular cell, and has enabled the identification of molecular markers for resistance to freezing.

In June 2016, pursuit of the innovative greening of tramway track beds

In the context of its biodiversity programme and actions carried out under its "Dijon c’est ma nature ! J’agis pour la biodiversité" programme , the Dijon City and Urban Community, via its Science Gardens and Parks Department, together with the INRA/Agrosup/uBourgogne/CNRS Joint Research Unit for Agroecology, has since 2014 been conducting an innovative experiment on new ways to green its tramway tracks instead of using conventional grass.

TWB and PILI partners for the production of bio-based and ecological dyes

Toulouse, 12 July 2016 - Toulouse White Biotechnology (TWB), pre-industrial demonstrator, and PILI, company specialised in the bioproduction of renewable and ecological dyes, have started a collaboration. The aim is to reach the pilot scale of the industrial manufacturing process for a first dye.

International Conference on Crop Losses

An International Conference on Crop Losses caused by diseases, pests and weeds will be held in Paris from 16 to 18 October 2017. The aim of this conference is to assess how plant diseases, pests, and weeds negatively affect crop health, crop performances, ecosystems and society. Although these negative impacts are well recognized, their quantification is still fragmented or incomplete.
The conference will bring together key players in global agricultural and crop health research in order to explore and discuss opportunities related to analyzing, quantifying, and modelling crop losses to diseases and pests.

International conference on Agri-Chains and Sustainable Development Linking local and global dynamics

AC&SD 2016 will bring participants from all world regions to debate about the role of agricultural value chains in implementing global and local frameworks and partnerships for translating the Sustainable Development Goals into reality. Agricultural value chains form spaces where local and global challenges to sustainability connect and within which local and global actors experiment and negotiate innovative solutions.
Distinguished keynote speakers and up to 250 delegates, including key actors from developing countries and innovators from the field, are expected at the conference venue in Montpellier.
