  Fundamental research or applied research? Both are necessary for collaborative innovation

In a mission-oriented research institution such as INRA, fundamental research and applied research form a continuum that extends into the innovation process. Support for innovation must therefore reinforce the quality and vitality of these two types of research, which neither compete nor are superior to each other. Furthermore, they are both fed by interactions with society in all its diversity. The independence of public research is not synonymous with its isolation or disconnection, but with ethics and deontology. These are the convictions that underpin INRA's definition of its innovation processes, based on its scientific strategy (#Inra2025). The Institute is increasing its involvement in joint research initiatives with different actors, farmer groups, enterprises, technical institutes or associations, etc. The objective is to encourage a cultural mix, enrich scientific investigations, increase the transfer of knowledge and know-how, and develop cross-disciplinary research with potential for innovation in all its forms: social, technological and practical.  

In the future, the digital transition and the development of participatory research will amplify this dynamic for collaborative innovation to serve the well-being of citizens and preservation of the planet.

Functions manipulated by pests to obtain more resistant plants

The mechanisms which lead to disease development have been revealed by identifying the essential genes involved and whose activation leads to increased resistance against three pests of agronomic importance: nematodes, oomycetes and bacteria. A patent has been filed regarding the involvement of phytosulfokines in this mechanism.

Evaluating the ecological status of water courses by sequencing the DNA of diatoms

Since 2009, INRA has been developing the innovative technology of metabarcoding on diatom communities (micro-algae), the aim being to design a rapid method to characterise the ecological status of water courses. This method is currently being standardised at a European level.

Syringaresinol, a triple A bisphenol

A natural molecule arising from lignin, syringaresinol is an interesting alternative to the bisphenols synthesized by the petrochemicals industry: it is not toxic, it can be synthesised at a large scale in the laboratory and materials that contain it display good thermal and mechanical properties.

Apple: a very high quality genome obtained

An international consortium led by INRA and involving research scientists in France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands and South Africa, has been able to obtain a very high quality apple genome by combining the most recent DNA sequencing technologies with classic mapping methods. Their findings provide scientists an unprecedented view of the composition and evolution of a tree genome, and offers new perspectives for the creation of new varieties, notably in order to reduce pesticide use. These results are published in Nature Genetics on 5 June 2017.

Since 2007, Heurisko designs automated devices enabling manufacturers and researchers to optimise the conduct of their R&D projects. The Heurisko technology, aimed at accelerating the development of new microbial strains, has been introduced into the Toulouse White Biotechnology (TWB) center of excellence. The objective for Heurisko is twofold: to be at the heart of innovation in the field of biotechnology and to be in permanent contact with manufacturers, actively involved in this center.
