UMR 1313 - Animal Genetics and Integrative Biology (GABI)

As of 1 January 2009, the six research units of the Animal Genetics Division of INRA at Jouy-en-Josas (the Biochemical Genetics and Cytogenetics Laboratory, the Fish Genetics Laboratory, the Animal and Genetic Diversity Unit, the Quantitative and Applied Genetics Unit, the Radiobiology and Genome Research Unit, the Genomics and Lactation Physiology Unit) are merging to create the largest research unit on the Jouy-en-Josas research centre.

The Animal Genetics and Integrative Biology Unit (UMR GABI) is a joint research unit placed under the authority of INRA and AgroParisTech, a graduate institute in Science and Engineering. It gathers nearly 200 scientists, researchers with teaching activities, engineers, technicians and students from research organisations (INRA, CEA) and AgroParisTech, and from technical and professional organisations (in particular, the Institute de l’Elevage, the Haras Nationaux, UNCEIA and IFIP).
This reorganisation will improve the visibility of both the Animal Genetics Division and INRA, reinforcing the positioning of both the institute and its partners as major actors of research, higher education and development in Animal Genetics on both the national and international levels.

Research at GABI is aimed at the study of the structure and function of animal genomes, the understanding of the determinism of complex traits (immunity and health, product quality, differentiation and growth, adaptation) and proposals of management strategies, improvement and valorisation of animal genetics resources, contributing to the development of innovative, competitive and sustainable production systems. Research is developed on the main farm species (cattle, horses, pigs, poultry, fish) as well as on model species (mice, Medaka fish) intensively using high-throughput Biology tools.

Gabi is divided into eight research teams :

The Cellular Differentiation and Specialisation team (DISC) : Their main objective is to decode the factors responsible for regulation of expression of genes that are responsible for phenotypes.

The Pig Genetics team (GdP) : Their research is centred mainly on the genetic determinism of traits.

The Population, Statistics and Genome team (PSGen) : They study, via methodological and applied approaches, all questions pertaining to genetic diversity of animal populations, statistical analysis of variation and its consequences on some biological functions of structural and expressional genetic variability.

The Bovine Genetics and Genomics team (G2B) : Their studies pertain mainly to genetic improvement of dairy cattle, beef cattle as well as studies from phenotypes to genes in cattle. In addition, cross-over studies for both subjects are developed.

The Integrative Biology and Equine Genetics team (BIGE) :  The whole equine gene sequence and the development of high-throughput molecular tools has stimulated research and incited joint projects between quantitative and molecular geneticists. The new organisation of this research team is a good opportunity to make research on this species lasting.

The Genetics and Aquaculture team (GenAqua) : The focus of their research is the production of knowledge that contributes to the management and an efficient use of fish genetic resources. A large number of their studies are centred on the analysis of genetic determinism of traits. The acquiring of trout genome knowledge is also an important objective as well as management of genetic resources and optimisation and evolution of fish selection schemes.

The Genomics, Immunity and Health team (GIS) : Research is dedicated to genetics of health, immune response and resistance to disease in pig and poultry, approached with genomic and functional tools.

The Milk Genomics and Health team (LGS) : Its fields of research are centred around the mammary gland and milk, notably on the relations with consumer and animal health. An integrated approach and genomics tools are used.
